Hugh’s story

Hugh Hornsby. A career built around people.

Hugh Hornsby is a speaker, leadership advisor, and host of Blue Collar Smart. His work is grounded in more than 40 years in the trades—and a belief that people are capable of more than they think.

From the trades to the boardroom

Hugh has spent more than four decades building businesses, developing people, and leading turnarounds in plumbing, HVAC, and wholesale distribution. His experience includes organizations such as Everflow, Water Coolers, MIFAB, and Sunroc.

His path has included sales and team leadership. The Wholesaler's 2024 profile traces his work from wholesale distribution to NIBCO, a vice president of sales role at Sunroc in 1998, and joining Everflow in 2019 to help develop its national sales team.

Across those roles, the recurring work was helping people recognize their strengths and find a place to grow.

Learning differently. Seeing potential.

Hugh describes a lifetime of learning differently and being underestimated. Those experiences shape how he sees other people: differences can reveal strengths and opportunities that are easy to overlook.

His story also includes business setbacks, rebuilding his career, and his experience with cancer. In the speaking material he shared for Blue Collar Smart, Hugh connects those experiences to how we respond to fear, adversity, and uncertainty.

We may not control what happens to us, but we can choose what we do next.

People build businesses

People build businesses—and when people begin to believe they are capable of more, everything can change.

Hugh calls his approach People-Based Business: identifying potential, creating belief, developing people, and building cultures where people and businesses grow together.

That philosophy also connects the practical experience of the trades with the structure needed to grow. Relationships and systems, instinct and data, people and process, experience and technology all have a part to play.

Recognized for helping others grow

The Wholesaler named Hugh its 2024 Person of the Year. Ruth Mitchell's December 2024 profile, “Gratitude is Attitude,” describes his industry career and the mentoring relationships behind that recognition.
